Game Recap

On Friday October 13th, “Fright Night” the NoCro Panthers traveled to Arlington Bowie for the 3rd district ball game. We came into the contest 2-3(0-2), while Arl. Bowie was 2-3(1-1). Both teams in need of a big win to stay in the playoff hunt, so the evening had lots at stake for goals of both teams. On the heels of Arl. Bowie choosing to make the Homecoming game against us, it would be your NoCro Panthers that ended the night with the last laugh as we picked up our 1st district win beating the Volunteers 26-14.
The night would start off with our offense receiving the ball once again for the 6th straight game. After moving the chains and changing the field position however the opening drive would falter and Bowie would take their 1st possession down the field and score on a 10 play plus drive. Not to be outdone, our offense would fix the mistakes and take the next drive and hit pay dirt as Jr. QB-Caleb Leake would score on a 1yd plunge making the score 7-6 in the 1st with 3min remaining in the frame. On Bowie’s next drive, big plays would haunt us as they scored again and made the game 14-6 closing out the 1st quarter. What looked to be the makings of a track meet football game, turned and shifted completed to NoCro Football as the defense wouldn’t relinquish another point the rest of the night.
In the 2nd quarter that magnificent and beautiful connection of Leake to Jones would show up for the 13th & 14th time this season as Jones caught 12yd and 24yd TD passes in the 2nd frame creating a one score possession lead for us going into the break with a 20-14 lead at the half. Not to be out shined, because if not for the outstanding play of the offensive line the success of our top 3 skill players would go for not. Sr’s OC-Clayton Mitchell, OG-Lezra Dews & OT-Blake Jones continue their dominance up front. Jr’s OT-Tyler Smith and OG-Chris Jones have been punishing our opponents up front consistently every week creating holes for the run game and plenty of protection for the pass attack.
The third quarter would prove to be the bend but don’t break frame for both teams as neither team could sustain drives, yet on our side of the scope…the constant battle for field position aided our efforts along with timely plays to move the chains and defensively get off the field. With lots at stake, the “will” of the NoCro Panthers proved to be too much as the 4th quarter proved to be gut check time for us to close out the contest.
In the 4th, the splash plays of the frame belonged to WR-Julian Jones as he would catch back to back fade balls placing us down on the 1yd line to take a two possession lead. And take advantage we did as Sr. RB-Jailen Robinson plunged in from a yard out pushing the score to 26-14 with 10min remaining in the game. All the defense had to do now was close out and close out we surely did. Bowie had some success driving the ball, but when our backs were against the wall, that’s when the NoCro defense made the biggest plays. In scoring position, Bowie attempted to throw to their sideline to what looked to be an open target when Jr. CB-Delven Davis stepped in front and intercepted the ball in the end zone basically deflating any opportunity of a comeback attempt as our offense would move the chains again, pick up critical 1st downs and run the clock out to ice the game. BEAUTIFUL!!!
Offensively, Sr. Julian Jones was a flat out beast as he marked a career high 10 receptions on 202yds receiving. With the career high came along with 2TD’s pushing his season mark to 14 total TD’s on the season and he’s quickly approaching the 1k mark for the season. Sr. RB-Jailen Robinson was equally impressive as he carried the rock for 151yds on 17 carries for 1 TD. On the season, Robinson has held steady to avg 8yds per carry…SPECIAL! As for QB-Caleb Leake, even though he completed 12-19 attempts for 2TD’s and 233yds…the timeliness and accuracy of those 12 completions pressed the offense to do what it does best…score points!
Defensively, Jr. LB-Justin Cleveland had the performance of his young HS career by notching 18 tackles, 1 TFL & 1 FF! An incredible stat line for a young man whose starting to come into his own within the LB unit. Other outstanding performances came from Sr. DE/LB-Jaylan Sharp as he had an 8 tackle night, 1 TFL, 2 QB hurries & 1 Sack. Sr. LB-Mark Shelton posted an 11 tackle performance as these three young men led the charge for the defense on the night.
Next Friday on Oct 20th, your NoCro Panthers will host FW Paschal for Homecoming and use it as a prime opportunity to further put ourselves in position to fight for a playoff berth push our record to 2-2 in district play and look to hit our stride coming down the back stretch of district play finishing the month of October with warranted success which always leads to November success in the playoffs in the great state of Texas. Until next time, be blessed and “Happy Hunting”! Go NoCro!
