Multiple Teams · Men’s Basketball – Survive & Advance

Abilene HS – Abilene, TX

The North Crowley Men’s Basketball Team found themselves in familiar territory on Friday night…  The familiar territory?  An area round playoff game!  The Panthers have been in the Area Round (2nd Round) of the playoffs 17 times in the schools 19 year history.  This year, the Panthers traveled to Abilene High to face the Wolfforth Frenship Tigers in the Area Round of the 6A Region 1 Playoffs.

The Panthers got off to another torrid start shooting the ball Friday night as Senior Wing – Tre Thomas put the team on his back early accounting for 12 first quarter points and 4 rebounds…  In the second quarter, Thomas passed the offensive baton to Soph Guard – Grant Sherfield who scored 13 in the quarter including 3 consecutive three pointers and 4-4 from the line.  The Panthers led 20-12 at the end of the first and 39-21 at the half.

After a third quarter that showed the Tigers from Frenship HS mount a comeback by outscoring the Panthers 20-12 in the frame, the Panthers again turned to their offense in the 4th to close the game.  NC scored the majority of their 4th quarter points from the line as the Tigers were aggressively trying to claw their way back into the game.  Sr. Wing/Guard – Jordon Myers, who had been held in check on the offensive end of the floor most of the night, had 2 big field goals in the 4th. Sherfield was 8-10 from the line in the 4th quarter as the Panthers held on for the 70-58 victory over Frenship to advance to the 6A Reg. 1 Quarterfinals.

Sherfield led the Panthers in scoring with 28 for the game on an extremely efficient shooting night that saw him finish 5-9 from the field, 4-6 from three and 14-16 from the line.  Thomas scored 18 points on 8-14 shooting from the field and 2-5 from three as well as leading the Panthers in rebounds with 8.  Myers closed out the double figure scoring for the Panthers with 10 to go along with his 7 rebounds.  Sr. Forward, Kevin Ellis again stuffed the stat sheet by grabbing 4 rebounds, recording 3 assists and taking 2 charges.  Kalem Hardaway turned in a magnificent defensive effort vs Bradley Brooks, the Tigers leading scorer, as well as having 4 assists with no turnovers for the game.  The Panthers also received a huge game from Jr. PG Tayron Moffett who was called upon with Sr. PG Akili Vinings recent ankle injury.  Moffett responded with 5 points on a perfect 2-2 from the field, including 1-1 from three.  Moffett also led the team in assists with 5 for the game.

The Panthers have moved to the 6A Region 1 – Regional Quarterfinals vs the Keller Indians on Tuesday, Feb. 28th at 7:30PM @ Saginaw HS.  As always, the Panthers road games will be podcast @ on the “Blue Channel”.
